Research & Design: Havana, Cuba
Research & Design: Habanamar, from the city to the sea; the path for the recovery of the Malecón.

With Chiara Pellizzola, for University of Ferrara, Department of Architecture; Instituto Superior Politecnico (CUJAE), Havana, Cuba.

The research deals with the renovation of the promenade Malecón, the main vehicular artery to connect Havana from east to west. In the current situation, the decadent historic neighborhoods and the waterfront are physically and perceptively separated, due to the lack of public space in relation to the sea, a comprehensive mobility plan, and mono-functionality of the Malecón. The project suggests the preservation of tangible and intangible heritage, from the reuse of buildings to the safeguard of informal activities. The design strategy is carried out according to two guidelines: connect the city to the sea and give identity to public spaces. The goals are developed along all the 8 km of waterfront, combining economic and social development. A feasibility study designs an economically sustainable system that makes the project autonomous and self-sustaining, according to the island’s present and future policies. The project was developed after almost 4 months of Fieldwork; the main topics of focus are slow mobility, flexible public space, economic redevelopment, reuse urban morphology, and highways reconversion. The project was included in two publications and one photographic exihibition.
