Commoning Floods:
Pilot II, Italy
Part of PhD Research activities
Milano Archweek 2024

This workshop uses Community Mapping to explore the multiple meanings and values of water in the Niguarda neighbourhood and its surroundings. It aims to create a shared map of local water resources, including uses, aesthetic value, presence or absence, excess, and risk—such as flooding or drought, particularly relevant near the Seveso River. The process invites participants to reflect on water as a resource for play, identity, and transformation.
Through guided activities, participants—including residents and local actors—identify spatial relationships, environmental challenges, and existing or potential synergies. This non-technical but expressive approach draws on everyday knowledge to enrich participatory planning processes. It empowers communities to represent their lived experiences, tell their stories, and co-develop design insights that complement formal planning tools.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska‐Curie grant agreement No. 101034328.
